It is one of the tradition common to many societies in Africa, Europe (Basque) and countries in Asia. <BR/><BR/>The interesting thing I observed was in old days mother-goddess mAri had shrines close to anthills. I think there could have been some connection with mother-goddess and snake combination. <BR/><BR/>Similar situation is observed in Basque region.
