Small update on Jack fruit (posting No 20).

Dundiraj mentioned in his Kannada column in ‘Vijaya Karnataka’ that the English word ‘Jack fruit’ is derived from the Malayalam word ‘Chakku palam’.

  1. I never heard my folks calling it 'jakku'. The name is 'chakka'. Also, wikipedia article confirms that. But you never know :-).

  2. Yes, it must be 'chakka' or 'chakku palam' not jakku palam. Kooja chakku apparently refers to 'tuluve'(soft, mushy) kind of pelakkai.
